Creating an entertaining show involves so many different elements.
One of the most important things I learned from attending several workshops with Jeff McBride and Eugene Berger at the Mystery School in Las Vegas, was the importance of scripting your performance.
I see a lot of shows fail because the performer either tries to ‘wing it’ or hasn’t put together a decent script. Particularly with something like magic, just watching someone perform a bunch of effects is not in itself necessarily all that entertaining – it is the story and the scripting that really makes the show entertaining.
Many great mentalists and magicians will have other people who help create the scripts for their performances – getting a great team involved with people who specialise in different areas is really important – you might be a great magician, but not the best script writer.
